[Nov. 12th, 2020|10:24 am]
Early in the morning, I take my dog for a walk in a large expanse of wasteground which is destined to be (according to a lorry driving delivering hardcore), a centre for drone training. The carpenters doing the roof of the centre usually arrive as the dog is pissing against the fence. They have a fag and have some meat on bread with muffled techno emanating from their third or fourth-hand motors; have a stretch and slowly slide their tools out of the back.

Today, though, there were just two guys in high-visibilty vests standing by their new estates (volvo or subaru). They were in the middle of a vast outside space talking in the manner of people who have been to university - like the transcript of an interview in a publication for the intelligent and informed - words falling in organised fashion as if ideas were blocks in a game of Tetris.

They were both wearing masks.

As if the Earth was an alien place.

Kinky, in a way. Like being suffocated during sex (apparently).

saruna [Nov. 10th, 2020|09:53 am]
Vakar runāju ar topošo sirds ķirurgu. Ļoti gudrs cilvēks (for what it's worth) - viņš runā arābu, angļu; franču, krievu, un latviešu valodas.

3) Maskas pratktiski neko nedara: tas viss, principā ir 'for show' (mēs runājām angliski, nezinu, precīzi, kā to teikt latviski).

There is a house just down the road from us where the local alcoholics live. Their leader once tried to break into our shed one winter. He was drunk and fell into the deep snow. He found it really hard to get up and his dog had to rally him to the necessary effort. He's now in a wheelchair and holds court by the local Mego. Last night I was taking our dog for a walk and found him facing down the traffic in the middle of the road. Well, he had his eyes shut, so he wasn't really facing the traffic. I pulled him back on to the pavement. "Tev nevajag ceļa vidu (vai 'vidē')." Fuck knows what I said. "Tu esi sturgalvīgs tips." I continued. "Ai, man nav neviens majās. Man pofig." He murmured loudly.
"Nu labi," I said and crossed the road. "Hei," he shouted after me. He was sitting there with his arm outstretched. I went back and shook his hand. "Paldies, tev!" he said.

I crossed the road and saw one of his compadres face down in the shop car park. I set off for home, where there was a fire in the stove and the family in the kitchen. I hadn't got far when I realised that he was holding up the traffic in his wheelchair again.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

So if the flu has a mortality rate of 0.1%, then surely we should be wearing masks all the time? No more gigs, crowds in stadiums, big parties, kids at school. I mean wouldn't it be incredibly selfish? We could spread it around until it kills someone's grandmother. Let's keep this thing going.

Not sure it's related. Doesn't matter.

'Saslimt' nozīmē 'to fall ill'/'come down with'
Aglijā ir tā, ka "86% of UK residents who tested positive for COVID-19 during lockdown did not have the specific virus symptoms (cough, and/or fever, and/or loss of taste/smell)" - no šejienes: https://medicalxpress.com/news/2020-10-symptoms-covid-poor-marker-infection.html

Esmu novērojis (ļoti slinkā un nezinātniskā veidā), ka tiem/tām, kuriem/ām nav bernu un jau ir gados (30+ish) varētu būt paaugstinātas bailes no Cvd. Neēsmu pārliecināts, protams - jau domāju par diviem spilgtiem izņēmumiem.

Par jaunajiem ierobežojumiem, manā pilsētiņā, cilveki dumpojas tirā latviešu stīlā ... pagaidām.

Norman Mailer could have written about this theatre. He could have got a book about Trump stripping the mask. Would have pounded down into the subterranean streams painfully eroding the American manifestation. He was the journalist that 'blew my mind'. I had picked up a copy of 'Miami and the Siege of Chicago' on a whim to read on the coach trip to a geography field study in South Wales. I had never thought you could write about politics like that. I met him much later. Went with my brother to hear him talk. My fiancee of four years had just left me. Met her in the university bar beforehand- she was going to see the Levellers - we were going to see Norman Mailer. We pissed ourselves (nearly) when the old hebrew declared there was no such thing as a good woman. He is wrong: the world is full of the blessed things, but at the time... I wanted to bring a desperately old copy of 'Why are we in Vietnam?' for him to sign. I bought it in the second-hand bookshop in Fakenham and took it to read on the train ride to visit her in Yarmouth. There is a passage in it where he describes the death of a bear shot in Alaska. It had a soul. I read the passage to my fiancee over and over again as I came down from the LSD she had presented me. I had nearly died a few hours previous. died of laughter at the notion of two old gits betting on 92 no-score draws and winning the pools. I bought a copy of 'The Executioner's Song" and waited in line. Some young sapling ahead of me asked him to sign the book he gave him as 'From one writer to another'. The kind of cunt you get sometimes in Norfolk. "How do I know you are a writer?" Mailer asked him, and wrote 'From a writer'.

tukša vieta [Sep. 29th, 2020|11:13 am]
Mans kapteins stastīja man par šo nesen. Lika man atcerēties, ko mana sieva kadreiz kaislīgi apgalvoja/jautāja virtuvē, kas bija kaut kas lidzīgi "tev - nu jums, mums ir taču ko teikt. Vairāk nekā tie jaunieši. Kāpēc klusējam?" Konteksts, protams ir svarīgs. Konteksts bija muzika.

muzika/izpausme - 'the grass is always greener on the dark side of the moon, don't end up penniless, having blood on the spittoon'.

Pastkarte no Latvijas [Sep. 24th, 2020|10:56 pm]
"And then it all came together for me – why Latvia hasn’t succumbed to the hysteria and inanities that Britain has. The ordinary Latvian has little time for state propaganda. They had enough of being told what to do in the Soviet era and they know that political masters are prone to filling them with nonsense. Yes, the regulations are there – the art gallery I visited was not short of OTT instructions on how many people should be in a room or which way you should walk along a corridor – but the visitors often ignored them and staff didn’t intervene. Between 1940 and 1990 the Latvian people were either under the heel of the Nazis or the Soviets. Like so much of Eastern Europe, Latvia has had a taste of totalitarianism in recent memory and the people don’t want to go back to it. They also have no time for identity politics or any other dumb trivialities – there are no debates about gender neutral loos here.

For now I’ve escaped the psycho-circus that is the UK. I’m dreading returning to our anxious, masked, misinformed, divided, cowed nation. How I wish we were more Latvian. It is a country which is so much more at ease with itself than we are, in so many ways."

no time to check the latvian [Sep. 23rd, 2020|11:47 am]
Vispār dzīve ir ļoti jauka. Vakar gāju skriet ar suni ap 7:30 no rīta. Kad atgriežos no mēža, viena sieviete, kura bija vēdusi savu bernu uz bernudarza, man pateica:

labrīt

Viņa, ko, tikko no anglijas?

Bēt par angliju, un the worldview (the sacred is the world, we just have the worldview imposed), un par šo te 6 6 6, es izlēmu skatīties uz faktiem ...viens pats!

Rē, "6,732 new people tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) in England in between 20 August and 26 August."

+

"Testing capacity between 20 August and 26 August was at 2,695,786 tests per week, an increase of 18% since the previous week."
