Estonian man released from life imprisonment 9 years ago jailed again in Germany
TALLINN, Nov 22, BNS – An Estonian man released from serving a life sentence for killing a shop security guard in Germany at the end of the 1990s has been jailed again after violating a requirement of his parole that he never come to Germany again, Postimees reported.
The 52-year-old man identified by his first name as Eduard was released from prison in Germany, where he was serving a life sentence, nine years ago. German police detained him as part of a routine check of passengers arriving in Germany from Poland by bus on Wednesday morning. The man was taken to a detention facility in Frankfurt am Oder and from there on to a prison in Berlin.
Since Eduard had been released from serving a life sentence and had violated the terms of parole, the life sentence originally handed down to him by court took effect again.
Eduard was punished with life imprisonment for killing a security guard in a Berlin store in 1999, while living illegally in Berlin.
On July 27, 1999, Eduard paid for one item of detergent at the checkout lane of a store located at Kopenicker Bahnhofstrasse, news portal RBB reported. He had, however, tucked six pairs of women's tights packed into a plastic bag up his clothes to avoid paying for them. The value of the stolen goods was 23 marks and 94 pfennigs, or 12 euros and 24 cents translated into euros.
The shop's security guard, identified by his first name as Mirko, noticed the theft attempt and told Eduard to go with him to the store's back room. When the security guard started to call the police, Eduard pulled out a Makarov pistol he had obtained illegally and opened fire. While the first bullet hit a closet, the second one hit the 36-year-old guard, who died from injuries on the spot.
Eduard fled the scene but was arrested by the police six days later, after being spotted in the city district of Charlottenburg where he was hiring a room. He was arrested inside the apartment by a police special operations team.
Eduard confessed to the crime and received a life sentence from a court at the beginning of 2000. He was released on parole ten years later, on June 1, 2010 with the parole condition that he must never enter the territory of Germany again.
Eduard has now resumed serving his life sentence in a Berlin prison. According to spokespeople for German police, the first opportunity for parole will open for him in 15 years.
Prosecutors in Germany are not ruling out that Eduard has visited Germany on more occasions in the meantime, as no regular document checks are performed on borders within the Schengen area.
