At one time they were psychopathic raiders ("kill them all, men, women, children and goats" as per many Bible bits), quite comparable to the Yanomamo or other violent, vicious tribes like that.
Quite possibly they were initially comprised of an agglomeration of outcasts and criminals, as the Egyptian "Habiru" etymology suggests, if that has any weight (although ofc that's open to debate). When more settled they were normal criminals and gangsters - e.g. as per the story of Abraham, extortionists and pimps.
Eventually they became relatively big cheeses in their local area (Judea), then they got stomped on by bigger, more civilized cultures (other Semitic and Aryan peoples), and in captivity, as per Nietzsche, their leaders developed a slave mentality based on lying to get ahead, presenting an ever so 'umble, eternal victim front, with dreams of glory and world domination behind that facade, and that's the general character their people took on over time.
But they still have that vicious, violent character underneath (e.g. cf. how all the Holocauast stuff is pure projection - it never happened but it represents the fantasy life of how Jews would like to treat others, and have always treated others if and when they've gotten a measure of political and military power, as in pre-Stalinist Soviet Russia, as in Israel today). |
