[T]he idea of a natural sympathy between the deepest truths of nature and the deepest truths of the human mind, which can be exploited to allow gradual development of a truer and truer conception of reality, makes us more at home in the universe than is secularly comfortable.

    Thomas Nagel, The Last Word

A standard history of political philosophy goes like this. First, political philosophy before 1971 was boring, very abstract, concerned with definitions (bad). Then, in 1971 Rawls made it relevant to practice (good), though he did so by eliminating politics and seeing everything in ethical terms (bad). Finally, since 1971, political philosophers have realised that political philosophy should deal with politics (good).

Sometime later, he learned that "Reasons and Persons" was being memorized and chanted, along with sutras, by novice monks at a monastery in Tibet.

    Various complaints of misrepresentation.
Lesbians and feminists accused Fassbinder of misogyny (in presenting women as complicit in their own oppression) in his 'Women's Picture'. 'The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant' has been cited by some feminist and gay critics as both homophobic and sexist. Gay critics also complained of misrepresentation in 'Fox and his Friends'. Conservatives attacked him for his association with the radical left. Marxists said he had sold out his political principles in his depictions of left-intellectual manipulations in 'Mother Küsters' Trip to Heaven'. The most heated criticism came for his play 'Garbage, the City, and Death', whose scheduled performance in Frankfurt was cancelled early in 1975 amid charges of anti-semitism.

Don't despair, Avicennam arī bija problēmas
I read the Metaphysics [of Aristotle], but I could not comprehend its contents, and its author's object remained obscure to me, even when I had gone back and read it forty times and had got to the point where I had memorized it. In spite of this I could not understand it nor its object, and I despaired of myself and said, "This is a book which there is no way of understanding." But one day in the afternoon when I was at the booksellers' quarter a salesman approached with a book in his hand which he was calling out for sale. (...) So I bought it and, lo and behold, it was Abu Nasr al-Farabi's book on the objects of the Metaphysics. I returned home and was quick to read it, and in no time the objects of that book became clear to me because I had got to the point of having memorized it by heart.

Until his death in 1900 Nietzsche remained a mute invalid under the guardianship of his sister Elisabeth, a repulsive individual with whom he quarrelled bitterly when she married an antisemitic high school teacher, Bernhard Förster, and accompanied him to found an “Aryan” colony, Nueva Germania, in Paraguay. Following the failure of the fly-blown settlement and the suicide of her husband, Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche continued promoting racist ideas by seizing control of her helpless brother’s writings, establishing a Nietzsche Archive and methodically deleting passages in which he lambasted the “race swindle”. For this service she was duly rewarded. On the basis of a highly selective biography and a heavily redacted compilation of Nietzsche’s writings that she published under the title The Will to Power, she was several times nominated by admiring German academics for the Nobel prize in literature. When she died in 1935, Hitler attended her funeral.

Mill believed everybody gained from freedom of expression, including those who wanted to shut it down: all human beings want the benefits that come from growing knowledge. But what if many are happy to relinquish these benefits for the sake of values they consider more important and want to impose on others? Mill’s answer is that what matters is the continuing advance of the species. But as Nietzsche understood, the idea of “humanity” as a collective agent with universal goals that it pursues in the course of history is a secular residue of a religious faith in providence.

Sakot "reliģija", katrs domā kaut ko savu - no veca, bet aktuāla NNT raksta :

When an Arab now says “Jew” he largely means something about a creed; to Arabs, a converted Jew is no longer a Jew. But for a Jew, a Jew is someone whose mother is a Jew.
    (..)
When someone discusses the interests of the “Christian minority” in the Levant, it doesn’t mean (as Arabs tend to think!) promoting a Christian theocracy (as I said earlier, the church has always been uneasy in its relationship with the profane; full theocracies were very few in Christian history, just Byzantium, a short attempt by Calvin and few other episodes). He just means “secular” or wants a marked separation of church and state.
    (..)
“Belief” can be epistemic, or simply procedural (pisteic) – leading to confusions about what sort of beliefs, are religious beliefs and which ones are not, disentangled through signaling. For, on top of the “religion” problem, there is a problem with belief. Some beliefs are largely decorative, some are functional (they help in survival); others are literal.

Meitenes milzīgā izmēra mamma man izpalīdzīgi aizrāda, ka es nepietiekami pieskatu savas skaļās jaunaudzes.

    Man prasa atdot.
    /69. psalms/

Vecajā latviešu tulkojumā: "Ko es nemaz neesmu nolaupījis, tas man jāatlīdzina"
Bet King James versijā: then I restored that which I took not away!

Pēdējo reizi filmā tik ļoti smējos pie Sorentīno This Must Be The Place (kur starp citu tieši tās pašas abas kultūras atsauces).
