Pāvestu gaidot, no jezuītu joku arhīva:

    ***
What is similar about the Jesuit and Dominican Orders?
--They were both founded by Spaniards, St. Dominic for the Dominicans, and St. Ignatius of Loyola for the Jesuits. They were also both founded to combat heresy: the Dominicans to fight the Albigensians, and the Jesuits to fight the Protestants.

What is different about the Jesuit and Dominican Orders?
--Well, have you met any Albigensians lately?

    ***
A Greek Orthodox archaeologist, an Evangelical bible historian, and a Jesuit anthropologist were collaborating on an excavation just outside the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem. They slowly uncovered an entrance to what appeared to be an ancient tomb. Above it they saw an inscription in both Greek and Aramaic: "Here Jesus of Nazareth, who claimed he was King of the Jews, was laid to rest after he was executed at Passover under Pontius Pilate."
Excited by this discovery, they hastened to clear the debris from the entrance, only to be stunned to find not an empty tomb but the skeletal remains of a human body.
"Ohhhh," sighed the Greek Orthodox scholar, "the Church and all the good it does is based on a false event."
"Ohhhh," moaned the Evangelical, "the New Testament, which has guided my life, is nothing but a lie."
"Ohhhh," exclaimed the Jesuit, "there really was a Jesus!"

    ***
There are three things that even God does not know about the Church:

How many congregations of religious women there are.
How much money the Franciscans have stashed away.
What the Jesuits really think and what they are going to do next.

    ***
A Franciscan and a Dominican were debating whose order was the greater. After months of arguing, they decided to ask God for an answer when they died. After much deliberation, God sent the following letter:

    My sons,
Please stop bickering about such trivial matters. Both orders are equally great and good in my eyes.

    Sincerely,
    God, SJ

    Kārtējo reizi cilāts Haidegera inputs
    http://ndpr.nd.edu/news/the-strauss-kruger-correspondence-returning-to-plato-through-kant

For Krüger, Heidegger's re-raising the question of being pointed to the importance of ontology, which involved theological and moral as well as strictly philosophical issues. For Strauss, Heidegger's "destruktion" of the Western philosophical tradition had made it possible for the first time in centuries to perceive its true roots, and thus opened up the possibility of a genuine return to classical philosophy.

Mīļākais vinils no manas paaudzes, manu vienaudžu mūzikas -- varētu būt P.J. Harvey Let England Shake.

In the fields and in the forests,
under the moon and under the sun
another summer has passed before us,
    and not one man has,
    not one woman has
    revealed the secrets
    of this world.

    So our young men hid
    with guns, in the dirt

    superiority, embitterment, illusion
No kādas recenzijas par Hafneru (Sebastian Haffner, Defying Hitler: A Memoir [nepabeigta grāmata, ko tagad publicējuši 1930. gados Vāciju pametušā, nu jau mirušā Hafnera pēcteči]):

Haffner points out that, even among those who hated the Nazis, there were false “remedies.” Some, he says, especially the older generation, retreated into “superiority”: They mocked the childishness and stupidity of the regime. When the Nazis consolidated their power, and produced statistics about their success, many of these people collapsed.
Another temptation is “embitterment”—becoming addicted to gloom and rage. For the embittered, “The dreadful things that are happening have become essential to their spiritual wellbeing. Their only remaining pleasure is to luxuriate on the description of gruesome deeds, and it is impossible to have a conversation with them on any other topic.” This can drive people to madness—or to a despairing surrender.
A third temptation, which Haffner says was his own, is the opposite: to flee from embitterment into illusion. According to Haffner, German literature of the mid-to-late 1930s was dominated by nature writing, childhood memoirs, and family novels. “A whole literature of cow bells and daisies, full of children’s summer-holiday happiness, first love and fairy tales” accompanied the rallies, the violence, and the blare of propaganda. For most of these escapist writers, Haffner relates, it ended in mental breakdown.

    philosophical pathways
I would propose that the first axiom (..) is the recognition that the main philosophical pathways of the twentieth century — analytic, continental, Marxist, Christian, etc. — are exhausted, at least in the sense of being filled out within the parameters these projects have set for themselves. Institutional, academic philosophy certainly seems on the precipice of a very rough ride, to say the least. Conceptually speaking, the problems are of neo-positivism and postmodernism: on the one hand, more than a hundred years of philosophers telling the world that we really only need philosophy to explain what science is doing (and, guess what? — administrators are now listening and figure this philosophical mediator isn’t worth the money); or, on the other hand, philosophers writing middling-to-bad poetry (in a world that has little use for good poetry) and sociologically tinged texts on how everything is power (“bodies and languages,” as Badiou puts it — except, he says, there are truths, and a truth is always the exception). This bifurcation into two dead-ends (..) has been caused by the modern trend whereby philosophy has been “sutured” to its conditions, for example to science in the case of Russell and Quine, or to poetry, in the case of Heidegger and arguably the later Wittgenstein.

"All are drawn unwittingly into the structure of violent reciprocity -- which they always think they are outside of -- because they all initially came from the outside and mistake this positional and temporary advantage for a permanent and fundamental superiority."

    Man ir teikta sena ziņa,
    Šonakt tēvs mirs trejiem dēliem,
    Jaunais galēs veco guļu,
    Mazais lielo, vājais stipro!

NABAGS: Ha! ha! ha! - un veiks, kas zaudēs, -
Ņems, kas atdos, - savs, kas cita, -
Balts, kas melns, un mans, kas tavējs!

MELNĀ MĀTE: Ko tu runā, viltus vērpējs?

NABAGS: Ha! ha! ha! - Tā ziņa balta,
Tici tai, tad es jau veicis.

    Ieskats mūsdienu tulkotāju darbā
Anonymous, The Cloud of Unknowing, Prologue

    14. gs. oriģināls
    (https://web.archive.org/web/20131010134218/http://www.lib.rochester.edu/camelot/teams/cloud.htm):
Fleschely janglers, opyn preisers and blamers of hemself or of any other, tithing tellers, rouners and tutilers of tales, and alle maner of pinchers, kept I never that thei sawe this book.

1922. g. Evelinas Anderhilas (Underhill) neliels modernizējums:
Fleshly janglers, open praisers and blamers of themselves or of any other, tellers of trifles, ronners and tattlers of tales, and all manner of pinchers, cared I never that they saw this book.

    viņa ievadā skaidro: 'ronner' = a gossiper, a tale-bearer; 'pincher' = a covetous or niggardly person;
'jangler' = no vārdnīcas: Someone who, or something that jangles; A chatterer; Someone who argues noisily.
    'fleshly' = šeit 'worldly'.

1961. g. Kliftona Voltersa (Wolters) tulkojums:
I do not mind at all if the loud-mouthed, or flatterers, or the mock-modest, or fault-finders, gossips, tittle-tattlers, talebearers, or any sort of grumbler, never see this book.

2011. g. Karmenas Batčeres (Carmen A. Butcher) tulkojums (jūtams, ka tulkotājai tai dienā bijusi iedvesma):
I hope that habitual gossips, boasters, flatterers, fault-finders, busybodies, whisperers, liars, and character assassinators never see this book.

    No sarunām:
    – Nāk rudens, un sievietes ielās tā dziļi, dziļi ieskatās acīs, skatienu nenovēršot un nesarkstot. Meklē apgādnieku. Katru gadu atpazīstu šos skatienus.
    – Nāk rudens, un vīrieši ielās tā dziļi, dziļi ieskatās acīs. Pazīstu šos skatienus. Tas nav gadījuma sakars, ko viņi meklē, bet biedrs laimīgai dzīvei, vai vismaz šai ziemai, – kāda, kuras garie, zīdainie mati miegā būs pielipuši viņam pie kakla un kas pamodusies vienmēr smaidot pagriezīsies pretī un apvīs kājas ap viņa vidukli.
