Talking about the record in a press release, guitarist Tad Kubler said, “I think this is a guitar heavy record. But I would NOT say this is a heavy guitar record. The main objective being not to make the same record as the one previous. I love Boys and Girls and Stay Positive. But they have a very similar feel and sound.” He also cited jazz composer Terence Blanchard and Jon Brion as influences. Meanwhile, singer-lyricist Craig Finn calls Heaven Is Whenever “less anthemic and more complex.” Sounds like there may not be as many “whoa-oh-oh” hooks this time, eh?

Angular Recording Corporation's press release describes the album as featuring:
    "six-foot Japanese Taiko drums, a thirteen piece brass and woodwind en-semble, sub-heavy beats, prepared piano, a children’s choir, Foley recording techniques (including a melon with cream crackers attached struck by a hammer, used to simulate the sound of a human head being smashed), and the ethereal voice of Heather Marlatt from dream-pop group Salem."

Grizzly Bear is a four-piece psychedelic/experimental pop band from Brooklyn, New York. Their music utilizes melody and ambiance in conjunction with hazy-eyed choruses, whistles, piano, banjo, and several woodwind instruments.

Dark Was the Night is the twentieth compilation release benefiting the Red Hot Organization, an international charity dedicated to raising funds and awareness for HIV and AIDS. Featuring exclusive recordings by a number of independent artists and production by Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National.
