Swedish "Old media" gets 200 millions from the government in "Democracy" support

MEDIA. The government, the Center Party and the Liberals are now proposing a strengthening of media support to support newspapers in the corona crisis. A total of 200 million.
According to the Löfven government, the spread of the corona virus has had major consequences for media in Sweden. Not least, ad-dependent media has quickly lost advertisers and thus a large part of their revenue, the government claims.
- "At the same time, the demand for news is very high and the importance of reliable journalism is clear. Having a multitude of media throughout the country is crucial to democracy," the government writes on its website.
The January parties therefore present a number of measures for the media industry. This includes a "permanent reinforcement" of media support of SEK 200 million per year, starting this year.
This is already part of the spring amending budget for 2020, which will be presented on April 15:
- "To deal with the most acute crisis, SEK 150 million is allocated for a temporary new distribution support for three months. The support covers all printed news magazines, and thus will benefit more than those currently receiving operational support. The remaining SEK 50 million is proposed to double the support for the surveillance of geographical areas with weak or non-existent journalistic coverage, so-called white spots. "
