More and more Swedes "flee" abroad to Åland to homeschool their children
Published January 23, 2020 at 6:23 pm

More and more Swedes are now moving abroad to escape Sweden's compulsory and state-controlled schooling.
Since 2011, it is virtually impossible to teach their children home in Sweden. Then a law change was introduced which forces all children to go to school and follow the politically controlled teaching, which is regulated by various governance documents, including curricula.
For example, the curriculum for the compulsory school, which is issued as a government regulation, states that "all people's equal value, equality between women and men and solidarity between people are the values that the school should embody and convey".
But everyone is hardly satisfied with the ban on homeschooling.
According to SVT, the number of Swedish families who move to Åland, where Swedish is spoken, to home school their children has "greatly increased" in recent years. SVT calls them "school refugees", and they also move to other countries.
In most of Europe, and in the other Nordic countries, homeschooling is legal. Sweden is the exception.
Other countries have "compulsory education" instead of "compulsory schooling". The freedom of how the children absorb the knowledge is thus considerably greater.
Education Minister Anna Ekström does not applaud the trend that Swedes move abroad to get away from the Swedish school, although she points out that people are allowed to choose where they want to live. However, she believes it is important that the children learn to become good Democrats.
- "We have compulsory schooling for a reason. We want the children to learn a lot, collaborate with others and grow up in a democratic society", she says to SVT and also points out that the students also will need to learn to socialize and work with children "from other backgrounds". Another reason why the Minister of Education does not want homeschooling in Sweden is that, according to her, it can be bad for the children to learn things from other than "educated teachers".
