In theory, it is possible that hypertrophic status is a natural / desirable lake status and, in such cases, decrease of phytoplankton biomass would, indeed, mean the deterioration of lake quality. Still, the authors do not give any evidence why high phytoplankton biomass would be a natural / desirable characteristic in case of Lake Ziway.
