LiveJournal was getting big, indeed, and I know it was clearly profitable until the time it moved into its offices and hired on a small staff of people. The new offices would've entailed a level of overhead that could potentially be unsustainable, but I suspect that it was sustainable and a manageable part of the total budget, especially in that it allowed the servers, etc. to be hosted onsite, rather than co-located elsewhere at greater expense.
