Thus as a biblical scholar, I can state with confidence that a rejection of homosexuality as we understand it today finds no justification in the Old Testament. The argument that homosexually inclined people should be condemned to abstinence cannot be derived from the Old Testament. Social discrimination against or state criminal prosecution of such people constitutes a lack of mercy and a crime against human dignity – as the Roman Catholic Church’s Catechism also clearly states.
