Russian schools to install ORWELL facial recognition technology
https://rtvi.com/news_en/russian-schools-to-install-facial-recognition-technology-vedomosti/
Cameras will be installed in over 43,000 schools nationwide – 1,608 educational institutions in 12 regions are already equipped with the technology. The total cost of the project exceeds 2 billion roubles ($28.8 million), while the cost of each individual camera amounts to around 10 thousand roubles ($144).
The cameras will be equipped with 'Orwell' facial recognition modules from Russian tech company NtechLab [creators of FindFace, a facial recognition search engine – Ed.], which will monitor people in real time and cross-check them against a 'monitoring list', enabling schools to immediately identify outsiders or intruders.
The technology will also notify parents when their children arrive at school. Authorities are considering integrating the video surveillance system with 'electronic diaries', which monitor schoolchildrens' academic performance.
The project, commissioned by regional educational departments across Russia, will be executed by the National Informatization Centre (part of the Rostec State Corporation). The nationwide school surveillance system is now part of the Russian government's 'Digital Economy' program.
