Child gang In Grums town - residents stay inside
<
Tenants in a residential area in Grums dare not let their children play outside in the playground for fear of other children who are attacked both verbally and physically. - "We have had problems with children who have been fighting for one to two years. It has escalated. Unfortunately, it is about very young children, 8-12 year olds, who are attacking other children. They fight with sticks and tubes, take the strings, throw stones, and pronounce very rough words. They say they will "Fuck you", and rape. They scream "I will kill you" to children of their own age, 8-9 year olds", says Kajsa Sohlberg.

Kajsa Sohlberg is elected by the tenants' association in Grums and resides in the area where children put fear in other children.

Children dare not go out and play and parents dare not let their children out, says Kajsa Sohlberg in Grums.

They have been beaten with sticks, choked and thrown rocks at other children.

- "We have had problems for a long time and it has escalated. Unfortunately, it is about very young children, 8-12 year olds, says Kajsa Sohlberg, residents in the area and elected representatives in the tenant association."

Now the police and the municipality of Grum will make an investment in the area.

She lives in the area and is also elected representative in the tenant association, which now requires that something be done to solve the problem.

Police: "The children need help"
The tenant association has recently met with the housing company, the municipality and the police to get help.

One of the participants was the municipal police Lennart Hynynen. He says to the magazine Hem & Hyra, who also wrote about the problem, that it is unclear whether the parents at all know what their children are doing.

- "For the autumn, we will therefore have an information meeting with interpreters for these children need help and it cannot wait. If they behave like this now, you wonder where it should go if nothing is done", he says to the newspaper.

-"We need to find a form where we can spend time with the children and families," says Kajsa Sohlberg in Grums.

In a letter to the municipality, the tenant association writes - which also Hem & Hyra reported about - that “Those who make a noise, bus and violence in this case are children of new arrivals. Therefore, neighbors begin to link the problems and xenophobic views. In the long run this leads to a very segregated residential area where neighbors in many ways talk about "we towards them" which will only escalate if it is not broken very soon. "

"We will live together here"
- We are going to live together in this residential area and I am positive that we really should be able to do that. It is good that we can have cultural exchanges and learn from each other. But we need to find a form where we can spend time with the children and families. The children agree and are safe are a and o, says Kajsa Sohlberg.

She wants to find a way to work together to guide the children and stop their destructive behavior.

Kajsa Sohlberg notes that "it is very tough in the area".

- "The young children dare not go out", she says.

Even adults get assaulted and get to hear both rough words and not to "get their nose into our business".

- "A parent told me that she was spit on when she said "let my daughter be", says Kajsa Sohlberg.

She explains that it is difficult to communicate with the children's parents and that residents need help with this in the form of, for example, interpreters.

"Hard to reach the parents"
- There are problems with reaching the parents and telling them what is happening. It is important that we can have a communication so it feels okay to correct the children in order to help them. So that the problem may not have to be greater than it needs to be, says Kajsa Sohlberg and adds:

- "It is important that this is done in a good way. If I reprimand a child I do not know what the child in turn then tells his parents."

At the meeting with the housing company and the municipality, it was decided that a number of measures should be taken to improve the situation in the residential area.

- "The police have said that they should start to show more here during the summer and also participate during an activity day to be arranged. This autumn, after the holidays, there are thoughts that a collaborative project that has been going on in another area will be moved here", says Kajsa Sohlberg.

-"What is happening is very serious, and very unusual," says Municipal Manager Annika Lomarker about the problems with children who threaten and fight in a residential area in Grums.

"Will start activities this summer"
Annika Lomarker is both a municipal manager in Grums and CEO of the current housing company. She confirms that the municipality has a plan.

- "We will go in and help both from the municipality and the housing company. Among other things, by engaging staff from the recreation center who can start activities already this summer. Further ahead we will arrange a farm day. When we work like this, we always use interpreters so that everyone is involved and understands, she says and also mentions the project that Kajsa Sohlberg told about."

Annika Lomarker notes that what is happening is "very serious".

- "And very unusual. We haven't experienced any other stop. We believe that it is a bunch of children who trigger each other in a way that is not good", she says.

Anxiety about how the children feel
She also says that there is concern about how these children feel.

- "It is important that those in the area who know what is happening report it to the social services, so that they can go in and investigate. If they don't know anything, they can't do anything either."

Annika Lomarker explains that it is a widespread idea that young children cannot be reported to the police for threats and ill-treatment.

- "But you can. The police then forward the case to the social services", says Annika Lomarker.

Kajsa Sohlberg says that the area was otherwise quiet and "very nice".

She describes a fine community of neighbors between whom she hopes to re-emerge along with the new ones.

- "Previously we went out and took a cup of coffee with each other. Everyone sat outside. But now nobody is going out. We have talked to other tenants that if we start to show ourselves again, others may follow suit. Someone must take the first step. It is important to address this problem now so it does not escalate. That we make ourselves understood by the children, that they understand that it is better to be friends and that everyone can play together", she says.
