One interesting theory was that it would knacker the Euro (by fucking up the German economy). The current Fiat monetary system is creaking (pension funds in the UK were a few hours from being wiped out), and you could view it as a war between groups that keep themselves alive on the demand (coerced or otherwise) for these big unbacked currencies - the dollar for example.
