Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, directed by Karan Johar who ridiculously likes to be KJo (oh dear), is outrageously overblown. Every single bit of screen time is bursting with melodrama. Every shocking reveal is punctuated with a sound effect. In one amazing sequence, a series of harsh verbal blows are loudly bookended by cartoonish thunder claps—I mean, like every single fucking line of the scene. There's slow motion galore. The costumes are so 2001, especially once the action moves to London. The wind machine is never turned off. Simple conversations and everyone's hair is lustfully blowing in the wind. Because the style is so consistently nuts, it actually mostly works. It does take things a bit too far at times, and the relationship between Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol is nowhere near as powerful as it was in the amazing Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. But for all its flaws, it is somehow never boring even at a bloated three and a half hour run time. And man, there's some excellent songs. The "Bole Chudiyan" sequence had me utterly transfixed, despite all the N-Sync dance moves. Downloaded on Spotify instantly. I also really loved its emotional moments, of which there are many. Seriously, there's probably about forty minutes worth of nonstop crying. Very good Bollywood, but not great Bollywood.

So many tears. I've never seen so many people crying, especially over 3-1/2 hours. Come to think of it, I've also never seen so many people wearing turtleneck sweaters. So much so that one family member calls this "the turtleneck movie." Me, I call it "the crying movie." So.
