Researchers (Bloom (1985), Bryan & Harter (1899), Hayes (1989), Simmon & Chase (1973)) have shown it takes about ten years to develop expertise in any of a wide variety of areas, including chess playing, music composition, telegraph operation, painting, piano playing, swimming, tennis, and research in neuropsychology and topology.

The key is deliberative practice: not just doing it again and again, but challenging yourself with a task that is just beyond your current ability, trying it, analyzing your performance while and after doing it, and correcting any mistakes. Then repeat. And repeat again.

There appear to be no real shortcuts: even Mozart, who was a musical prodigy at age 4, took 13 more years before he began to produce world-class music. In another genre, the Beatles seemed to burst onto the scene with a string of #1 hits and an appearance on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964. But they had been playing small clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg since 1957, and while they had mass appeal early on, their first great critical success, Sgt. Peppers, was released in 1967.

Malcolm Gladwell reports that a study of students at the Berlin Academy of Music compared the top, middle, and bottom third of the class and asked them how much they had practiced:

Everyone, from all three groups, started playing at roughly the same time - around the age of five. In those first few years, everyone practised roughly the same amount - about two or three hours a week. But around the age of eight real differences started to emerge. The students who would end up as the best in their class began to practise more than everyone else: six hours a week by age nine, eight by age 12, 16 a week by age 14, and up and up, until by the age of 20 they were practising well over 30 hours a week. By the age of 20, the elite performers had all totalled 10,000 hours of practice over the course of their lives. The merely good students had totalled, by contrast, 8,000 hours, and the future music teachers just over 4,000 hours.

The idea that a young child could have psychopathic tendencies remains controversial among psychologists. Laurence Steinberg, a psychologist at Temple University, has argued that psychopathy, like other personality disorders, is almost impossible to diagnose accurately in children, or even in teenagers — both because their brains are still developing and because normal behavior at these ages can be misinterpreted as psychopathic. Others fear that even if such a diagnosis can be made accurately, the social cost of branding a young child a psychopath is simply too high. Mark Dadds, a psychologist at the University of New South Wales who studies antisocial behavior in children, acknowledges that “no one is comfortable labeling a 5-year-old a psychopath.” But, he says, ignoring these traits may be worse. “The research showing that this temperament exists and can be identified in young children is quite strong.” Recent studies have revealed what appear to be significant anatomical differences in the brains of adolescent children who scored high on the youth version of the Psychopathy Checklist — an indication that the trait may be innate. Another study, which tracked the psychological development of 3,000 children over a period of 25 years, found that signs of psychopathy could be detected in children as young as 3.

Люди живут-поживают свои жизни, и думают,- ну ладно, пускай все эти путины гунворы газпромы, пускай жрут воруют, фиг с ними, плевать, я буду делать свою жизнь, буду приспосабливаться, а они там как хотят. Но все равно же приходится сталкиваться с системой, с маленькими жадными гайцами, с маленькими хамящими чиновниками, все это медленно и ползуче начинает доставать, особенно когда есть возможность сравнивать, даже когда едешь в зачуханную Чехию или там Финляндию,- и сразу очень заметно, насколько по-другому государство к людям относится.

Понятно, что все это не очень беспокоит пасечника в Башкортостане, потому что пчелы,- они и при Гитлере полосатые, и при Сталине полосатые, но это заметно беспокоит, по тонкому наблюдению,- «раздраженные городские сообщества». Это все постепенно раздражает, но как-то нелепо кричать «к топору зовите Русь» из-за того, что оформить долбанный форд-фокус или там кондер в квартире поставить,- это убиться можно сколько очередей и идиотских бумаг. Но обидно. Но ладно, думаешь,- фиг с ними, будем жить поживать, а там оно, на малых оборотах, как-нибудь все исправится. И тут Путин говорит,- мальчики и девочки, I’ll be back, и человек понимает, что ппц. Эта тусклая слякоть за окном,- она теперь навсегда, насколько хватает взора.

Но и это человек перетерпит, поноет в жежешке и перетопчется, не будет смотреть в окно, задраит люки и в горнице моей уютно и светло. Но дык нет! Государство приходит к нему на дом. И говорит,- а скажи-ка свое мнение, гражданин, мне ужасно интересно, что ты обо мне думаешь. Ну говно вопрос, спрашивали- отвечаем. Не, говорит государство, ты мне не это только что сказал, ты мне совсем другое только что сказал. И тут тихий мирный гражданин начинает уже конкретно психовать. [...]
