"In 1993,
Ādolfs Buķis, a mechanic from Jelgava, approached the Monument of Freedom, sat down on the cold stone in front of the monument and shot himself. The newspapers reported that Buķis had with him a sign and a note explaining his cause. The police promised an investigation, but it never happened. He was implicitly dismissed as a person of doubtful mental health. The government and media continue to confuse democracy with the largely symbolic right to vote in general elections."
"In 2010, Tarek al-Tayeb Bouazizi, a Tunisian street vendor, set himself on fire, in protest of the confiscation of his wares and the harassment and humiliation by a municipal officials. His act became a catalyst for the Tunisian Revolution and the wider Arab Spring, inciting demonstrations in protest of social and political issues."
