Fake accounts of Latvian state institutions found on Twitter
RIGA, Jan 30, BNS - The Defense Ministry in collaboration with the military IT security team has discovered a number of fake accounts of Latvian state institutions on Twitter, which are not being maintained by the respective institutions, BNS was told at the ministry.
The account Ministry Of Defense, @LR_MoD is visually very similar to the Defense Ministry?s official account as it features the ministry?s logo and claims to be the ministry?s official account.
In addition to the fake Defense Ministry account, a number of other fake accounts claiming to tweet in the name of various Latvian state institutions and officials have been found on the microblogging site: Pres. Vincenzo, @VincenzoTorreto for the president of Latvia, Foreign Affairs, @LR_MoFA for the Foreign Ministry, Latvijas Televizijas, @LTV_RBLX for Latvian Television and Cocksworth, @EST_PRESIDENT for the prezident of Estonia.
The Defense Ministry has contacted Twitter admins asking to take down these fake accounts.
The ministry has also advised people to critically analyze publicly available information and its sources, including the information appearing in social media.
