Those less educated trusted their instincts, knowing something wasn't right, while those in the mid-range blind-trusted the authoritarian "experts" and those at the high end saw it to be the scam it was.

This is the midwit failure. Blinded by sinful pride and hubris the midwit thinks he's smart enough to not be fooled and trusts the experts, even when he shouldn't.
