Nīderlandes karogs ir sarkans/balts/zils, kāda burkāna pēc visur - sportā ir oranžā krāsa???

Orange is the historic national colour of the Netherlands, originating from the coat of arms of the Dutch founding father William of Orange-Nassau.

Oranžā ir Nīderlandes karaliskās ģimenes "oficiālā krāsa", jo viņu raduraksti sniedzas līdz pat jau minētajam Orānijas Vilhelmam (Willem Van Oranje, burtiski - Oranžas Vilhelms :D). Mūsdienās tā principā ir patriotisma un sava monarha (karalienes Beatrikses) atbalsta zīme. Un Oranje Holland (Oranžā Holande) ir viena no nacionālās futbola komandas iesaukām, jo viņu krekli ir oranžā krāsā (augstāk aprakstītā iemesla dēļ).

Starp citu, tieši tāpēc burkāni ir oranžā krāsā - pirms vairākiem gadsimtiem tos Holandē tādus selekcionēja tieši tā patriotiskā iemesla dēļ. Pirms tam burkāni esot bijuši, ja pareizi atceros, violeti.

From as far back at the 10th Century, the crop grew purple in India, the Middle East and Europe, with its origins traced to Afghanistan.

There are even reports that as long ago as 2000 BC, temple drawings from Egypt show a plant believed to be a purple carrot.

It was not until the 17th Century that they turned orange, when patriotic Dutch growers favoured the colour - as used on the national flag.
