Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Mine is a very strange one: I progressively reduced my meat intake (mainly red meat) over years for environmental reasons.

One day a friend of mine said that he was thinking about trying a carnivore diet (only animal products). I had a lot of free time at that moment, so I prepared a PowerPoint for him explaining every issue related to the production of animal foods. (It may seem too preachy, but the guy is a true fan of PowerPoint presentations).

For once, I couldn't believe that, for basically every possible threat our planet is facing, animal agriculture was the number one, two or sometimes three reason. It is so unefficient, a cause of world hunger, main driver of species extinction..... I knew I couldn't call myself an environmentalist if I consumed those products on a regular basis. Still, I wasn't thinking about giving up all my consumption forever.

Then, as a footnote on the presentation, I wanted to address the ethical aspect. Deep in our hearts, we all know that no nice things go on in these farms, let alone the slaughterhouses.

But I was so naive.

I was absolutely horrified when I read and watched how it all works. I couldn't believe both the numbers (for food, 86 billion land animals and 1-3 trillion marine animals) and the extent of cruelty we inflict on them. I can't possibly imagine a hell that is worse than the Dominion documentary.

I have always called myself an animal lover, so I thought: "Man, who are you trying to convince with these slides? You can't stop this from happening, but you won't give those industries one more € to kill on your behalf."

So the presentation didn't make my friend vegan, but it made me! (He didn't go carnivore, at least)
