Another theoretician who saw women as somewhat biologically deficient was Sigmund Freud (1933). He described women as being passive, masochistic, and narcissistic. He felt these defective qualities existed because women lacked a penis. This "physical deficiency" made them unable to resolve the Oedipal conflict. Thus, they became inferior in a moral sense and were less able to control their impulses. Although Freud does not directly relate superego weakness to female criminality, he implies women are inclined toward amorality because of their anatomical "deficiency". His general view of deviant behavior, a variety of sorts manifested by women, results from the "masculinity complex" or penis envy.
