In his famous essay, Rationalism in Politics, Michael Oakshot, after whom this lecture series is named, drew our attention to the character of the rationalist, someone for whom, and this is a quote, “nothing is of value merely because it exists, familiarity has no worth, and nothing is to be left standing for want of scrutiny.”

The rationalist, as Oakshot presents him, has total faith in the power of reason, starting from first principles to sort out the problems of contemporary society. He looks around at contemporary felt needs, the things that people say they need or want, and he tries to satisfy these things through the application of specialist technical knowledge that it is assumed people steeped in mere unthinking tradition or instinct don't have. And to the protest that the satisfaction of a given felt need might mean a loss of something else that is valuable for society, the rationalist will have very little sympathy.

Oakshot writes that anything should be allowed to stand between a society and the satisfaction of felt needs of each moment in its history must appear to a rationalist a piece of mysticism and nonsense. Assisted suicide legislation and implementation is now growing in popularity across the world at least amongst technocratic types and it presents us with a world-view which conforms closely to the rationalist one as Oakshot described it.
