Jonathan Warwick, 38, from South Shields, claims that the ghost of the rock legend has possessed him and wants to go into the studio to record new work. According to Warwick, ‘I woke up one morning feeling funny and I had no idea what it was until I picked up my lad Darren’s guitar and started strumming away. I’ve never even played guitar before. Turns out I’ve only been possessed by David bloody Bowie and he wants to record an album.’
Mr Warwick, however, does not share the enthusiasm of hardcore Bowie fans. He claims that he himself has no time for the Thin White Duke’s music: ‘I’m a big fan of hardcore techno – y’know, something you can get off your face to and just bounce about. Mind you, I like that “Jean Genie” song – I know that one.’
Mr Warwick’s family say that his behaviour has been entirely out of character and that he had previously shown no interest in becoming a musical legend.
‘I can’t be doing with all of this nonsense,’ says Mr Warwick. ‘I’ve got plumbing jobs on. If I’m hanging around the studio, engaging in free association, boundary-pushing musical experimentation, who is going to get Mary Daniels’ downstairs loo flushing properly? She can’t get upstairs these days with her hips, and her downstairs is causing her no end of problems.’
The Bowie estate for their part have clarified that the star is still dead and is unlikely to have possessed a plumber from South Shields.

Jau zeltam (Au), piemēram, ārējās čaulas elektroni kustās ar ātrumu, kas nedaudz lielāks par pusi gaismas ātruma (0,58c). Tas nozīmē, ka zeltu kā ķīmisko elementu pietiekami iespaido relativitātes efekti, lai tie, piemēram, ietekmētu zelta krāsu.
Līdzīgi, neņemot vērā relativitātes efektus, alvas-skābes akumulatoriem būtu jāstrādā tikpat labi kā svina-skābes. Taču izrādās, ka 10V no 12V parastajos 6 elementu svina akumulatoros, kurus mēs lietojam, rada relativitātes efekti. Tā kā alvā (kā gandrīz divreiz vieglākā elementā) šie efekti nav tik izteikti, tad alvas-skābes akumulatori nav praktiski.

Maybe money can’t buy you happiness, but meaningfulness can help you offset any losses. In "Some Key Differences between a Happy Life and a Meaningful Life", the authors write:

Baumeister (1991) proposed that the parenthood paradox can be resolved by proposing that people seek not just happiness but also meaning, and so they become parents because the gains in meaningfulness offset losses in happiness.
The present findings are consistent with that conclusion, which has broader implications for positive psychology, because they suggest that people will pursue meaningfulness even at the expense of happiness.”

Šobrīd ir laiks pārlasīt. Un kārtējo reizi pa rokai gadījās Čapeka "Stāsti no abām kabatām".
Nezinu, kā ar viņa popularitāti pasaulē; nu, atskaitot varbūt kā vārda "robots" autoru (lai arī viņš pats rakstīja, ka šo vārdu īstenībā izdomājis viņa brālis Jozefs). Padomju laikā viņš bija pietiekami populārs, pēc tam vēl latviski ir iznācis viņa "Dārzkopja gads". Man uz pamatskolas beigām klasesbiedrs uzdāvināja elegantu Maskavas izdevumu (no kurienes arī šī jūzerpikča, btw).
Bet īstenībā ne vien viņa kabatu stāstiņi ir kodolīgi un teicami trāpīgi (tāds kā O'Henri krustojums ar Marku Tvenu), bet arī uzbur tādu pilnīgu pagājušā gadsimta sākuma miera ainu, kur cilvēki nesteidzīgi dzer alu, pļāpā, mierīgi iet uz darbu un laicīgi uz mājām; tāda sakārtota dzīve, kur policisti ne vien zagļus ķer, bet arī ar tiem cilvēcīgi runājās; kur nesaprotama telegramma no meitas Francijā ir Notikums, bet ar ankambara apzagšanām nodarbojas tikai četri profesionāļi.
"Šveika" pirmskara daļā, protams, ir attēlots kas līdzīgs, un neba nu šie divi autori vien radīja priekšstatu par to laiku, bet šai nesteidzīgajā dzīves ritumā ar katru gadu ir kaut kas neglābjami pievilcīgāks, lai vai cik tas būtu izdomāts.

Criticizing bad science from an abstract, 10000-foot view is pleasant: you hear about some stuff that doesn't replicate, some methodologies that seem a bit silly. "They should improve their methods", "p-hacking is bad", "we must change the incentives", you declare Zeuslike from your throne in the clouds, and then go on with your day.
But actually diving into the sea of trash that is social science gives you a more tangible perspective, a more visceral revulsion, and perhaps even a sense of Lovecraftian awe at the sheer magnitude of it all: a vast landfill—a great agglomeration of garbage extending as far as the eye can see, effluvious waves crashing and throwing up a foul foam of p=0.049 papers. As you walk up to the diving platform, the deformed attendant hands you a pair of flippers. Noticing your reticence, he gives a subtle nod as if to say: "come on then, jump in".
