Since the start of term there have been a series of incidents, including two students being taken to hospital with alcohol poisoning. A senior tutor, Dr Paul Hartle, also complained of "excesses of drunken, naked girls running across college", according to the university newspaper website Varsity Online. In the letter to students Dr Tyler said such behaviour was "simply not acceptable". The 500-year-old college has fallen from 11th to 18th in the university's annual academic tables, leaving it sixth from bottom.
Dr Tyler said "silly drinking games" were banned. One of the most popular, "pennying", involves students throwing coins at each other's glasses. When a penny lands in a glass, the owner has to drink its contents in one gulp. |
