There is a house just down the road from us where the local alcoholics live. Their leader once tried to break into our shed one winter. He was drunk and fell into the deep snow. He found it really hard to get up and his dog had to rally him to the necessary effort. He's now in a wheelchair and holds court by the local Mego. Last night I was taking our dog for a walk and found him facing down the traffic in the middle of the road. Well, he had his eyes shut, so he wasn't really facing the traffic. I pulled him back on to the pavement. "Tev nevajag ceļa vidu (vai 'vidē')." Fuck knows what I said. "Tu esi sturgalvīgs tips." I continued. "Ai, man nav neviens majās. Man pofig." He murmured loudly.
"Nu labi," I said and crossed the road. "Hei," he shouted after me. He was sitting there with his arm outstretched. I went back and shook his hand. "Paldies, tev!" he said.

I crossed the road and saw one of his compadres face down in the shop car park. I set off for home, where there was a fire in the stove and the family in the kitchen. I hadn't got far when I realised that he was holding up the traffic in his wheelchair again.

So if the flu has a mortality rate of 0.1%, then surely we should be wearing masks all the time? No more gigs, crowds in stadiums, big parties, kids at school. I mean wouldn't it be incredibly selfish? We could spread it around until it kills someone's grandmother. Let's keep this thing going.

Not sure it's related. Doesn't matter.
