After a U.S. crackdown on traditional tax havens like Switzerland and the worldwide financial crisis of 2008, a number of countries, including some celebrated tax shelters, decided to adopt a shared reporting system. Now the participating countries are required to report to one another all the assets they hold for the benefit of one another’s people. the U.S. is not a party to the new reporting system — just as it is not a participant in a number of other international institutions. |
