As is well known, the plum blossom symbolizes February in Japan.

The tiny pink and white flowers remind people that spring is
approaching. The plum blossom tree also symbolizes studying, and
its other name, kobun boku, means "the tree that loves letters."

It has been said that this name came from the words of an ancient
Chinese emperor "When people love their studies, the plum trees
blossom profusely. But when the people abandon their studies,
they don't blossom."

Perhaps that's why we so often see a plum-blossom motif on many school
buildings in Japan. While studying can be rigorous, it is also quite
pleasant to take a book outdoors and read under a plum tree, enjoying
the subtle scent of its blooming flowers.
