Back in the early 80s., I was taking my first anthropology course. The chap teaching was on the shy side. "Your final grade will depend to a good degree on your class participation," he announced at the first class. "Now, you might well wonder how I'll be able to determine who participates when I never look anyone in the eye. I do too."
