True to form, the Soviet propagandists issued press releases proclaiming that Laika lived for a week, but more recent data released after the fall of the USSR reveals how she died: within hours of reaching space due to overheating inside the module. Sputnik II orbited the Earth with Laika, lifeless, thousands of times, for months on end before burning up in the atmosphere, in bright streaks across the sky. | |
