Tālāk redzams Forth Road Bridge mašīņiem un cilvēkiem, tādiem, kā es, kam patīk to šķērsot kājām... Un tad tur vēl var redzēt topam jauno, trešo tiltu... Tam gan nosaukumu nezinu... Tā varbūt arī būs - New Forth Road Bridge...

Šausmas, šausmas, šausmas... Un kāds vēl iedomājas man pārmest nepatiku pret sauļošanos... Nu jau trešā diena apkārt kopš es TIKAI pastaigāju pa pilsētu saulainā dienā... Seja vēl joprojām sarkana un deg... Āda uz deguna kļuvusi tik sausa, ka savilkusies čokurā un nāk nost kā tādam hameleonam... Labi, ka tas ir tikai deguns...

Tik jauka, brīnišķīga diena... Vecās kaimiņu pļavas vietā viļņojas jūra... Tik zila, nu tik zila kā ceļojumu aģentūru bukletu bildītēs no Dienvidu jūru salām... Viļņu gali putojas balti un vilināt vilina mesties piensiltajā ūdenī... Tikai vannai kāds izrāvis korķi un jau pēc pārsimt metriem ūdens sāk kristies un izsīkt, atklājot koku saknes un sarkanīgus taciņu dubļus...

Carved oak doors
Scottish, 16th century

 

The door is from the collection of Sir Joseph Noel Paton (1821-1901). Scottish artist with a keen interest in medieval arms and armour. Paton believed the panels came from the Royal Palace at Stirling Castle.



This door is carved with the Royal Arms of Scotland and the initials of King James VI (1566-1625). James was the son of Mary Queen of Scots. On the death of Elizabeth I, his mother's cousin, he also became King of England.

12:59 pm - Steeple engine Britain, c 1860s

The steeple engine gets its name from the shape of the rods and frame above the cylinder, which looks like a church steeple. These engines were used from the middle of the 19th century to provide power for machinery in factories and workshops. Larger ones were used to power steam ships.

 

Steam engines like this replaced much larger beam engines designed by James Watt in the late 18th century, which filled a small building. They operated at a higher steam pressure and could be more compact.

 

During the 19th century there were many steam engine makers based in Edinburgh and Glasgow. This engine was used to pump water at St. Leonard's Brewery in Edinburgh between 1868 and 1931.

10:29 am - Japanese temmple latern.

For centuries in Japan  both warriors  and wealthy commoners donated laterns to Buddhist temples.



This bronze latern is decorated with a variety of real and imaginary creatures. On the base are lion-dogs, further up there is a writhing dragon and then cranes in flight. On the latern chamber,  the circular design of three hollyhock leaves in the clan crest of the ruling Tokugawa dynasty. At the corners of the roof are fabulous fish with loin-like heads and the sharp  scales of dragons. At the top is a flaming jewel, symbolizing Buddhist teachings.



Scottish entrepreneur James Douglas Fletcher
(1857-1927) bought this latern (one of a pair) in 1902 for his home, Rosehaugh, on the Black Isle, Scotland. The laterns stood in the oriental garden at the front entrance.

01:01 pm - Columbian Printing Press.

The Columbian Printing Press was designed in 1813 by an American George E Clymer. The press was not a great success in the USA, so he brought his design to Britain where it proved more popular.



This model was made in Edinburgh by D&G Greig in about 1860, at a time when Edinburgh was a major centre of the publishing industry. It was bought by the Museum in 1865 and used to print labels until 1964.



The press was named after Columbia, the female personification of America and has a large counterweight in the shape of an American eagle. To demonstrate the links with newspaper production, it is decorated with dolphins which represent wisdom and the rod of Mercury, messenger of the Greek gods.
