> In short, it’s far-fetched and incorrect to think the colonies contributed all that much to present day wealth of European nations. Obviously some more than others, but Europe’s colonies were remote and problematic. In the meantime technological development and industrial development in Europe was what actually made a middle class possible in the 20th century (not the 19th). That did not happen in the colonies.
