HTKP161 Kalevala and Finnish Folklore Studies, 3 ECTS credits

SPRING 2012

Aims and content: The Kalevala, Finnish national epics, was compiled by Elias Lönnrot. The edition known and read in our times was published in 1849. The Kalevala consists of poems collected from the people of Eastern Part of Finland and Russian Karelia. It gave inspiration for national awakening and National Romanticistism. Today, it still continues to be a source for artist and academic scholars among others. This course familiarizes with the Kalevala, Kalevala metric poetry and Finnish Folklore Studies that grew from collecting and interpreting the Kalevala-metric Poetry.

HTKP180 Perspectives on Finnish Music, 3 ECTS credits

AUTUMN 2012

Aims and content: To give a basic knowledge of various music styles and traditions in Finland. The emphasis of the course will be on Finnish traditional and popular music. Different phenomenons from the ancient to the modern music will be discussed; kantele playing,  Sámi music , new folk music, Finnish tango and rock music etc. The course also contains some practical music making.

AUTUMN 2012

Aims and content: To introduce you to the ball games commonly played in Finland (Finnish baseball, ringette, rink bandy, ice-hockey, floorball).

HISPB01 Introduction to Finnish History, HTKP162, 5 ECTS credits

AUTUMN 2012

Aims and content: This course introduces you to Finnish history from the Ice Age to the present day, although the emphasis will be on the development of Finland since the 18th century. We explore important tuning points in Finnish history in order to understand how Finland became Finland over a long period of time. Like the previous year, the overall theme of the course is “Finland Between East and West.”
