Universal Stories Told Nationally: An Analysis of Latvian Filmmaking Industry

Abstract

This paper analyses the Latvian filmmaking industry and tries to determine the reasons for the current crisis, as well as propose policy implications that would solve the crisis. In order to answer the research questions an industry analysis is applied, consisting of external, internal and stakeholder analyses.

The paper concludes that the crisis is caused by the coordination and integration problems within the political environment shaping the industry. These problems are enforced by a lack of communication between stakeholders. In addition, the paper indicates that increased communication from the side of the Latvian National Film Centre should result in more value added in the production process of Latvian filmmaking, and, hence, provide a solution to the current crisis.
