"Votian belongs to the Uralic family, Finno - Ugrain branch, Baltic - Finnish group.

Votian is made up of the Western, Eastern, Kurovtsy (Kukkosin) and Kriewian dialects. The latter, which functioned in Latvia, became extinct early in the nineteenth century."
