It is part of our culture to think of ourselves as active agents, who "get things done" through our will and actions. However, we are discovering that the human brain and mind is more of a passive entity than an active one. Thought and growth are things that we experience, more than they are things that we cause. Often, they may even occur in spite of our attempted interventions, not because of them.
