The personal pronouns "I" and "you," for instance, refer to a different person each time they are used by someone else. By using the expression "I" the speaker establishes her subjectivity because she presents herself as  a "point" that can also be addressed by somebody else as "you". A second person is of crucial importance for the constitution of subjectivity because only a second person can acknowledge the subjectivity of the first person. If this moment of interpellation does not take place, the /I/ still has no meaning or subjectivity.

- Ernst van Alphen. 2005. Art in Mind: How Contemporary Images Shape Thought. Chicago and London: The University of Chicago Press, p. 11
