Technically, sea buckthorn “berries” are not true berries, in fact they are not even true fruits. Botanically, a “fruit” is derived from tissues that make up the ovary, the part of the female flower that contains the ovules or eggs. In the sea buckthorn, the single fertilized ovule produces what is technically a “nut” (a hard-coated fruit with just one seed), and this is what people would normally call the seed or pit. The fleshy tissue that covers this in the sea buckthorn is actually derived from the petal tissue of the original flower, and so botanically it is not part of the true fruit.
