Okay I will be provocational :) I sometimes think that people can become overly sensitive to the way controversial topics are raised when they are fearful of being cornered into conclusions that are 'unhelpful' to their worldview. Moreover, if those conclusions would be unhelpful to a worldview they would like to openly display as having to friends and colleagues, they are likely to shut down the discussion by denouncing the person who raised the topic of being morally degenerate and 'beyond the pale' (sublimely here 'with 'isn't that a bit rightwing'.
