In 1906, when he was 85 years old, Francis Galton spent a happy day wandering through the West of England Fat Stock and Poultry Exhibition, where he came across a “guess the weight of the ox” competition. Galton borrowed the entry tickets, added up the guesses in all 787 of the legible ones (13 could not be deciphered) and took the mean. The ox in fact weighed 1198 pounds. No-one in that Plymouth crowd had guessed it right; but the mean of all their guesses was 1197 pounds – just one pound out. “The result seems more creditable to the trustworthiness of a democratic judgment than might have been expected”, wrote Galton.
