Fred Gearing posed two related questions that have since proved as provocative for my students as they did at that moment for me. "It's somewhat of a wonder," Gearing began, either in those words or in words to that effect, "that anyone ever learns anything. But, given that they do, then we can also ask why everybody doesn't learn everything?"
