Perhaps the most poignant expression of the pervesiveness of the culture of terror was the comment made to me by a 13-year-old boy in the course of an otherwise innocuous conversation about how his mother's pregnancy was going. He told me he hoped his mother would give birth to a boy “because girls are too easy to rape” (Bourgois, 1989)
