In what must have clearly been a very unpopular decision that Panasonic wasn’t keen on publicizing too much, leading to lots of speculation, half truths and not so accurate updates, the entire series of Technics 1200 turntables are being discontinued.
Confirming a statement by Panasonic Australia, US spokesman Jim Reilly, sent the following email that should help clarify the matter and double as the iconic turntable’s eulogy:
To answer your question, yes, Panasonic is winding down production of the Technics brand SL-1200MK6 Analog Turntable, SH-EX1200 Analog Audio Mixer and RP-DH1200, RP-DJ1200 Stereo Headphones.
Panasonic decided to end production mainly due to (1) a decline in demand for these analog products and (2)
also the growing difficulty of procuring key analog components that are needed to sustain production. For your reference, the SL-1200 series Technics Analog Turntable had been in continuous production since 1972. At this point, there are no further plans for putting Analog Turntables in the market.
So there you have it. Kaput. Done. No more. RIP!
