2) Images of Lady Maya and Three Attendants
Asuka period , 7th century
Height of the largest image 16.6 cm
(Tokyo National Museum)

The largest of the four bronze images in this set, which was originally housed at Horyuji Temple in Nara Prefecture, represents Lady Maya as she is touching with her right hand a branch of a flowering tree in the garden at Lumbini (present-day southern Nepal), at which time Prince Siddhartha Gautama, who became the Historical Buddha, appeared from under her right armpit. In spite of its diminutive size it is exquisitely crafted, and we can see the baby Buddha emerging into the world with his hands folded together. The three celestial beings (tennin in Japanese) express with their whole bodies the joy of the Buddha's birth. Parts of their garments flap in the air as they move about in delight.
