For most people, the colors in the afterimage are almost exactly reversed: the green turns magenta, the blue turns yellow, the magenta turns green, and the yellow turns blue. These illusory colors are the visual complements to the hues in the original image. This complementary afterimage also works for most other colors: an orange square will produce a blue afterimage, lime green will produce violet, and so on, all the way around Newton's color circle.
