"... hybrid building often seeks to be hybrid and we misjudge it by applying the canons of stylistic purity. The old design definition of a camel – ‘a horse put together by a committee’ – not only brings out the usual distaste for hybrids but also the latent fact that a camel isn’t a bad animal trying to be a good horse and failing, but a perfectly valid, ugly, splendid quadruped in its own right. In like manner much Bizarre Juxtapostion knows it is hybrid and ugly, but it is trying to be so much else as well: humorous, rich in associations and striking. Basically it says with so much other romantic art, ‘I’d rather be interesting than good, I prefer character to beauty.’ We may disagree with the goal, but at least should try not to misunderstand it. Goodhardt-Rendel said of the Queen Anne Revival that it was ‘a Gothic game played with neo-classical counters’ and he may have regretted the fact; but he did acknowledge that the Quenn Anne wasn’t trying to be either Gothic or Neo-Classical and getting it wrong."
