Latvia: utterly and thoroughly pwned by FSB :( [15. Jan 2017|12:00]

artis
- FSB often uses coercion and blackmail to recruit most capable cyber operatives in Russia into its state-sponsored programmes. Heavy use also, both wittingly and unwittingly, of CIS emigres working in western corporations and ethnic Russians employed by neighbouring governments e.g. Latvia.
In terms of the success of Russian offensive cyber operations to date, a senior government figure reported that there had been only limited success in penetrating the “first tier” foreign targets. These comprised western (especially G7 and NATO) governments, security and intelligence services and central banks, and the IFIs. To compensate for this shortfall, massive effort had been invested, with much greater success, in attacking the “secondary targets”, particularly western private banks and the government of smaller states allied to the West. S/he mentioned Latvia in this regard. Hundreds of agents, either consciously cooperating with the FSB or whose personal and professional IT systems had been unwittingly compromised, were recruited.

Es neesmu vēl izlēmusi, ko man darīt. Es arī braucu viena - t.i. neviens cits no LV nebrauc.

"Throughout the 1980s, Chaum was torn between fear and hope. The Berkeley graduate looked like a cliché: gray beard, full mane of hair tied to a ponytail, and Birkenstocks. Chaum was concerned that “automation of the way we pay for goods and services” was advancing in large strides. He shuddered at the prospect of somebody else connecting the dots of his life. Chaum knew that an irritatingly detailed picture could be pieced together from hotel bookings, transportation, restaurant visits, movie rentals, theater visits, lectures, dues, and purchases of food, pharmaceuticals, alcohol, books, news, religious and political material. “Computerization,” he lamented in 1985, “is robbing individuals of the ability to monitor and control the ways information about them is used.”

Individuals in both the private and public sectors would routinely exchange such personal information about consumers and citizens. The individual user, Chaum was concerned, would lose control and visibility; there was no way to tell whether the information collected in bulk was accurate, obsolete, or inappropriate. “The foundation is being laid for a dossier society, in which computers could be used to infer individuals’ life-styles, habits, whereabouts, and associations from data collected in ordinary consumer transactions.” Such an outcome, Chaum suspected, would be unacceptable to many.

Thankfully, public-key encryption had emerged just in time to save privacy from automation, computerization, and data-hungry corporations and governments. So Chaum started working on concrete solutions: untraceable electronic mail, digital pseudonyms, anonymous credentials, and general protection of privacy. Chaum is best known for yet another revolutionary cryptographic discovery: blind signatures.

[..] If crypto cash would not be adopted widely, Chaum feared, “invisible mass surveillance” would be inevitable, “perhaps irreversible.”"

Modern Warfare: lessons from Ukraine [5. Jan 2017|14:29]

artis
"Russia uses electronic warfare for four primary roles:

– Denying communications: There are regions in Donbass where no electromagnetic communications—including radio, cellphone and television—work.
– Defeating unmanned aerial systems: Electronic warfare is the single largest killer of Ukrainian systems by jamming either the controller or GPS signals.
– Defeating artillery and mortars: Russian electronic warfare pre-detonates or duds incoming artillery and mortar rounds that have electronic fusing.
– Targeting command and control nodes: Russian electronic warfare can detect all electromagnetic emissions, including those from radios, Blue Force Tracker, Wi-Fi and cellphones, which can then be pinpointed with unmanned aerial systems and targeted with massed artillery.

To compete in an electronic warfare environment, the Army must become proficient on analog systems again, remove all unnecessary electromagnetic emitters such as personal cellphones; route antennas as far from operations centers as possible; conduct “a day without radios or computers” during training missions; and quickly field its own organic electronic warfare systems.

[..] Ukrainian units have observed up to eight Russian UAV overflights per day, and the constant awareness of being observed and targeted is often a traumatic experience that instills fear and inhibits movement, particularly in daylight.

[..] Data from the Ukraine conflict show that artillery is producing approximately 80 percent of all casualties.

[..] Russia operates the world’s largest and densest mobile air defense network in the Donbass region. The combination of integrated and networked self-propelled air defense systems and manportable air defense systems virtually shot the Ukrainian air force out of its own sky.
Ukrainian helicopters were reduced to flying 3 to 5 meters above ground or treetop level to avoid the larger surface-to-air missiles from the self-propelled systems, but ambush teams of two to five manportable air defense systems, cued by the integrated air defense network, shot them down."

Kondratiev 2017 [5. Jan 2017|14:09]

artis
"The theory that capitalism at the technology frontier operates in higher- and lower-growth cycles was originally developed nearly a century ago by the Russian economist Nikolai Kondratiev, who, for his efforts to explain capitalism’s seemingly inexorable ability to renew itself, was executed by Stalin in 1938.

Kondratiev’s theory postulates that over the past 250 years or so, capitalism has evolved through a series of forty- to sixty-year cycles, based on what the leading industrial sectors were for countries at the technology frontier. According to Kondratiev’s theory, each of these “K-waves” follows a similar cycle.

First, a new breakthrough technology or set of technologies is invented and rolled out broadly. What defines these technologies is that they are “platform” technologies (what economists call “General Purpose Technologies”) that not only dramatically enhance worker productivity, but also enable the creation of new businesses and whole new categories of employment previously unimagined.

After about twenty or thirty years, however, most of the gains associated with the new technology have been realized and productivity growth begins to slow. With technological differentiation no longer enabling business growth as effectively, businesses respond by creating various regulatory barriers to competition, or by moving production to lower-cost sites away from the sites of the technological frontier. For the sites on the technological frontier, this is a time of dearth. As always, it is the lower orders who suffer most, and thus what begins as technological senescence develops into economic stagnation and, if not addressed by political elites, eventually builds into a crisis of political legitimacy.

Gilman-3

[..] This is a crucial point, and one that Kondratiev himself did not sufficiently appreciate: In order for countries to thrive, technology is not enough; rather it is the assemblage of technology and institutions that is critical. States that fail to reconfigure their political and economic institutions to accommodate and exploit the new technologies risk ceding their countries’ spot on the technology frontier to nimbler competitors.

From this perspective, what was critical to the British economy’s ability to reap the productivity benefits associated with the second technological wave of railroads and steel were institutional reforms, including the abolition in 1846 of tariffs on grain imports, which lowered the cost of food for the growing class of industrial laborers. In other words, as railroads and steamships technologically enabled the creation of transnational grain markets, institutional reform allowed Britain to translate that technological potential into improved productivity across the industrial landscape.

[..] Whereas companies like Oracle and Microsoft, whose business software drastically increased the economic productivity of their users, typified the first phase of the infotech revolution, the emblematic software company founded since 2000 has been Facebook, a media company that, although not without its virtues, has also been an unsurpassed anti-productivity machine in the history of technology.

[..] Unless we get both a new K-wave going on the basis of new platform technologies and rework our political order, our politics are likely to remain poisonous. So the question is, what are the prospects for a similar renewal?

[..] For example, the locomotive was invented in 1804, but railroads only emerged as a K-wave platform for growth in the 1830s–40s; likewise, the automobile was invented in the 1880s, but only emerged as a true K-wave driver after World War II; and computers were invented in the 1940s, but only began to drive our current K-wave in the 1980s."

Technical Elites and their Discontents [5. Jan 2017|13:49]

artis
"In order to undercut the artistocrats, the professional classes created a mythology in which their superior education, technical rationality, and mastery of policy and legalism gave them a unique ability to manage modern societies. The pragmatic businessman, scientist, and inventor, in other words, was superior to the irrational and coddled prince. In reality, this myth masked the true weakness of the professional's position: he lacked the legitimacy of noble birth yet also lacked true solidarity with the downtrodden masses.

[..] There is a built-in complex of insecurity and resentment that stems from both the bourgeois fetish of education as well as the particular problem of where and how the professional derives social legitimacy.

[..] The reason why the mythology succeeded was that there was much underlying truth to it. Specialized education, technical rationality, and expertise was needed to control the industrial economy.

[..] However, the kind of rational spectacle seen in the machine economy did not easily transfer over to other areas of society. And the kind of hyper-quantitative measurement utilized to dispense outcomes in the domain of machine economics also did not scale up that well either. Over time, as the professional class became larger and larger, more internally divided, and less tied to its technical roots its legitimacy and power steadily declined.

[..] Meanwhile, those within the circle had internalized an ideology that cast those outside of it as irrational peons and disreputable rabble. To make matters worse, the dynamics of an economy rooted around the exchange of information was also destroying the economic lifeblood of professionals and animalizing them into a precarious existence marked by a Lord of the Flies-like competition for the precious few remaining guarantees of an economically secure and culturally meaningful life.

[..] While I suspect that current predictions of the coming age of artificial intelligence and other advanced automation technologies will likely be very, very off I do think that some kind of severe political and social dislocation is inevitable. This will likely produce a new class of elites, many of which will claim competence at the art of managing automation much like their ancestors did in the 19th and 20th centuries."

Un vēl lasīt grāmatas kurām 'šobrīd' ir atlaides, jo tu, piemēram, staigā pa grāmatnīcu un ieraugi jaunu, tikko izdotu grāmatu, pie sevis nodomājot, ka lūk šo grāmatu lasīsi pēc pāris gadiem, kad to lielākā daļa no tās mērķauditorijas būs sen jau izlasījuši, aizmirsuši, daļa varbūt arī pārlasījuši, uzrakstījuši recenzijas savos blogos, kuras neviens nelasīs, pēc pāris gadiem kad šīs grāmatas pārdošanas rādītāji būs bijuši tik slikti, ka veikala vadībai nebūs bijis žēl to ielikt 'izdevīgāk' grāmatu plauktā, tad tu to grāmatu pirksi un stāvot pie kases, gaidot rindā domāsi par laiku kas pagājis no tā brīža, kad pirmo reizi ieraudzīji šo grāmatu un šo brīdi, domāsi, ka tā brīža 'tu' identitāte ļoti knapi turas kopā ar šī brīža 'tu' identitāti vai arī neturas kopā itin nemaz.

"The Russian military theory of "reflexive control," defined as "a means of conveying to a partner or an opponent specially prepared information to incline him to voluntarily make the predetermined decision desired by the initiator of the action," focuses on the distortion, shaping, and manipulation of information rather than using offensive operations to destroy information systems. All systems of communication and control -- from the human mind to an command and control network -- can be subtly degraded, disabled, or subverted by feeding them false inputs or exploiting weaknesses in how they process, evaluate, and act on information. This can be seen in how easily even advanced artificial intelligence systems can be fooled or otherwise punked by simple tricks. But human social networks also be similarly fooled with with false information and compromised by deception and manipulation.

They have not only successfully intercepted sensitive US governmental communications, but also devised and implemented a political subversion operation that leverages our politics, media, and communication architecture against us. As Joshua Foust observed, Russia's operation "exploits weaknesses in Western journalism itself."

Russia has been learning how social media helps spread stories for years. Adrian Chen followed one early effort Russia undertook on this front in 2014. He researched a Russian "troll farm," where employees of the Russian government flooded social media feeds with dummy content.

We sit at the threshold of an new era characterized by the ubiquity of adaptive, data-hungry systems and a corresponding society characterized more and more by the offloading of its collective memory, cognition, and reasoning to computers."

APT28 [4. Jan 2017|14:56]

""It's the worst thing that can happen to you in television," Mr Bigot told me in his Paris office.

It quickly became clear that the network had been subject to a serious cyber-attack.

"We were a couple of hours from having the whole station gone for good."

Screens went blank in the foyer of TV5Monde.

It was a race against time - more systems were corrupted with every passing minute. Any substantial delay would have led satellite distribution channels to cancel their contracts, placing the entire company in jeopardy.

"We were saved from total destruction by the fact we had launched the channel that day and the technicians were there," said Mr Bigot.

"One of them was able to locate the very machine where the attack was taking place and he was able to cut out this machine from the internet and it stopped the attack."

"We owe a lot to the engineer who unplugged that particular machine. He is a hero here," Mr Bigot said.

The attack was far more sophisticated and targeted than reported at the time. The perpetrators had first penetrated the network on 23 January.

They carried out reconnaissance of TV5Monde to understand the way in which it broadcast its signals. They then fabricated bespoke malicious software to corrupt and destroy the internet-connected hardware that controlled the TV station's operations - such as the encoder systems used to transmit programmes."

Mr Bigot was later told evidence had been found that his network had been attacked by a group of Russian hackers, who are known as APT 28.

Vakar briesmīgi gribējās iedzert. Aizvakar jau gribējās. Bet dzīvokļa biedrene aizvien nav mājās, tādēļ es Tinderī sagrābstīju kaut kādu džeku, kas tieši brauca cauri manam rajonam. Nu, patiesībā, es pa ilgiem laikiem vispār atvēru Tinderi, lai mazliet sevi izklaidētu, un Evžens bija viens no tiem, ar kuru izveidojās kaut kāda puslīdz saturīga saruna. Tomēr mēs drīz vien atvadījāmies, jo puisis "to be completely honest with you" - brauca satikties ar citu meiteni un teica, ka uzrakstīs vēlāk.

"We joke that we yearn for a fight we can win with a gun, because the idea of a physical invasion is actually preferable to the constant uncertainty of economic, information, and political shadow warfare from the Kremlin. Combatants in these shadow wars bear no designations, and protections against these methods are few. From the front lines, in the absence of the fabric of reassurance woven from our values and principles and shared sacrifice — and in the absence of the moral clarity of purpose derived from “us and them” — civil society is left naked, unarmored.

[..] It’s also important to acknowledge that a more isolated, more nationalist America helps Putin in his objectives even while it compromises our own. We need to accept that America was part of, and needs to be part of, a global system — and that this system is better, cheaper, and more powerful than any imagined alternatives. For many years, the United States has been the steel in the framework that holds everything together; this is what we mean by ‘world order’ and ‘security architecture,’ two concepts that few politicians try to discuss seriously with the electorate.

[..] When it’s us against them, they were, and are, never going to be the winner. But when it's “all against all” — a “multipolar” world with “multi-vector” policy, a state of shifting alliances and permanent instability — Russia, with a centrally controlled, tiny command structure unaccountable for its actions in any way, still has a chance for a seat at the table. They pursue the multipolar world not because it is right or just, but because it is the only world in which they can continue to matter without pushing a nuclear launch sequence."
