Mr. Rorty: "I can still remember things, that I have done to other people 30 or 40 years ago. That emotions of shame and guilt are so intense, that I instantly try to distrack my attention. It isn't like I remember inflicting deliberate pain on anybody, it's just acts of omission: it would have been so easy to have done something for her or it would have been so easy to be kind, but I wasn't.
