Centrālamerika ir gan sirreālistu ideālu, gan konkrētās abstrakcijas starptautisma vieta. Abas tendences atspoguļojas izstādē – kopā ar naivismu un tradicionālismu. Protams, esot tik tālu no konteksta, ir neiespējami novērtēt šo priekšmetu mērķauditoriju, lietojumvērtību un izsvērt piederību mākslas vai reklāmas laukam.

Central America is both the Surrealists’ dreamland and the site of the internationalism of concrete abstraction. Both of these trends are represented, along with a certain naïveté and traditionalism. Inevitably, being so distant from the context, it is nigh impossible to determine the target audience of these objects, or their usability, or to discern their exact role in the fields of art or advertising.

Maskalāna fotogrāfijās ir gan V.Kleina asums, gan I.Rukas cilvēcība, tomēr dvako pēc kārtējās etnogrāfiskās sērijas ar ierāmētajiem “īpatņiem”. Autora attēlu parakstos vairākreiz atkārtojas naratīvs par nofotogrāfētā nevēlēšanos fotogrāfēties un “medusmaizi” fotogrāfam, kad viņi tomēr piekrīt – un neizbēgamas asociācijas ar koloniālismu un “Cita” piesavināšanos. Tikmēr Lailas Pakalniņas filmā vairāk nekā 50 minūtes ļoti estētiski “nekas nenotiek” – un ir grūti neskatīties tālāk.

Maskalāns’ photos have both the sharpness of V.Kleins and the human touch of I.Ruka, and still there’s the stench of yet another “ethnographic” photo series with framed specimens. The image captions retell several instances of the subjects refusing to be photographed, and the author’s “cream pie” when they finally do – as though it were a story of conquest and colonisation. Meanwhile, in the film by Laila Pakalniņa “nothing happens” exquisitely for more than 50 minutes – and it is difficult to take one’s eyes off the screen.
