Design: So what and who cares? Fostering continuous professional and business development

EDTI (European Design Training Incubator, www.edti.eu) Symposium and workshop will be held on 23 October 2009 in Tallinn (Estonia). Keynote speaker is Weronika Rochacka - British Design Council (Design Skills - Assistant project manager).

Lack of recognition was one of the most commonly voiced concerns raised by designers and design graduates in EDTI’s qualitative surveys. The perceptions design buyers have of design and the designer’s role obviously needs to change. This is the reason why EDTI is striving to build a strong European network to bring designers and business closer together.

The task for the future is to interweave design education and training with the ever-changing dynamic business environment, especially with the needs of the small and medium sized enterprises, which are the backbone of the European economy.

In addition to the presentation of the major outcomes of the EDTI project, participants will be invited to discuss a few key topics for the future:

How can we bring designers and companies closer together?
What are the main obstacles and issues for design schools, training and skills centres, professional organisations, business support organisations, and designers?
How can we improve employability of designers?
Do we need an initiative like EDTI?

Target audience: design teachers, curriculum developers, designers, civil servant, students, and those from business education, business support organisations, and design institutions and associations.
