The garbage collector does _not_ play well with the swap file. It causes each page belonging to the Java heap to be regularly paged in. Often. Several times per garbage collection pass, in fact. So whereas a system which stuck to C or C++ will still run at full speed when I load 550 MB of programs in a 512 MB of RAM, a 100% Java system would trash to death at that point. (In fact, see point 2: much sooner than that.) Or if only 300k out of that is Java stuff, it will act all elbows to the other apps. Often uses words like "subliminable", "methodological", "mispronunciated", "stregic", and "permanency" in place of their English equivalents. Platinum users (Haliburton, Exxon/Mobil, Chevron, Bechtel, Kenneth Lay) have noticed other erratic grammatical behavior, including such phrases as "is our children learning", "we need to make the pie higher", and "will the highways on the internet become more few". Strongly suspect some Jim Beam spilled into the model's grammar logic circuits during an all-night instructional binge session with Barbara and Jenna. Neilgu laiku atpakaļ, kad vēl strādāju diezgan pazīstamā Latvijas IT uzņēmumā, kas (mājiens) cita starpā hostē lielāko Latvijas php resursu, kā darba uzdevumu saņēmu uzdevumu uzrakstīt php skriptu, kas no kāda diezgan liela informatīva rakstura portāla savāc informāciju par kinoteātriem (filmas, laiki, vietas, filmu apraksti, utt.). Neesmu pārliecināts, bet man ir aizdomas, ka, pirmkārt, šis pats skripts tiek izmantots vēl šobaltdien, otrkārt, portāla īpašniekiem joprojām nav nekādas nojausmas par šīm darbībām ar viņu portāla saturu. Paša skripta uzrakstīšana aizņēma apmēram divas stundas plus vēl tikpat divās nākošajās dienās, jo izrādījās, ka nav nemaz tik vienots formāts visiem datiem. Portāla dizaina struktūra sastāv no vairākām nestētām tabulām, neskaitāmi daudziem <font> tagiem kā arī daudziem no šiem (un citiem) elementiem ir arī dažnedažādi style atribūti. Protams, pret visu nodrošināties nebija iespējams, tādēļ tika pieļauts apmēram 80% - 90% savācamo datu apjoms. Ja portāls būtu izveidots, dizainam izmantojot tikai css un html būtu minimāls, tīrs un viendabīgs, darbam būtu bijusi nepieciešama apmēram stunda vai divas un rezultāti tiktu ielasīti precīzi.
